Purple Mountains Corn is a lavender-purple heirloom with a story as rich as its color. It was carefully developed over several seasons by crossing Mandan Parching Lavender with Montana Lavender, two traditional mountain corn varieties with deep roots in the northern plains. The goal was to create a corn with bold, consistent flavor and color that works beautifully for masa, cornbread, or roasting, while honoring the traits that made its ancestors special. Resistant to common soil-borne diseases, Purple Mountains is both reliable in the garden and delicious on the table. Its name nods to the final musical project of the late David Berman—a variety with character, history, and a little quiet magic all its own. About Adaptive Seeds: Adaptive Seeds is a small, farm-based seed company devoted to preserving diversity and resilience in the food system. Founded by growers who believe that seeds should remain freely shared and adaptable, they focus on stewarding rare and open-pollinated varieties that gardeners and farmers can save and replant year after year. Much of their seed is grown on their own certified organic farm in Oregon or by a close network of regional farms, ensuring each variety continues to adapt to local conditions. Their work blends careful stewardship, community collaboration, and a deep commitment to keeping seed accessible, flavorful, and rooted in place.
